Local values
A local value is your own value for a {{variable}}. It's kept on this device, only for you, and wins over the environment's shared value when you send. Use one to try a different user id, keep a token you're testing with, or make a request sendable before the variable exists in the environment.
Teammates never see your local values, and they're never sent to Collapy's servers except as part of a request you send.
Where a value comes from
When you send a request, each {{variable}} is resolved in this order:
- Your local value for the active environment, if you have one.
- The environment's shared value (or secret).
Local values belong to an environment: switching to another environment uses that environment's local values. With no environment selected, you have a separate set of local values for "no environment".
Set a local value
- In REQUEST VARIABLES. Click a variable's value and type. When you click away or press
Enter, a local badge marks the variable. Typing the shared value back removes the local value. - Where you use a variable. In the Define form, pick Only me — local value as the target instead of an environment. See Variables.
- From the environment. In an environment's Variables tab, the Your local values section lists your local values for that environment.
A local value can stand in for a variable the environment doesn't define, so you can send a request before anyone adds the variable.
See and clear your local values
Open the environment and scroll to Your local values, or open the environment picker in the URL bar and choose Local values (n)…. The table shows each Variable, your Local value and the Shared value it replaces.
From a row's More menu:
| Action | Result |
|---|---|
| Use as shared value | Saves your value to the environment, so everyone gets it, and removes the local value. |
| Mark secret / Show as plain value | Hides the value everywhere you see it, or shows it again. |
| Reset to shared value | Removes the local value. Called Remove when the environment doesn't define the variable. |
Clear all removes every local value of that environment. Clear local values in the environment picker does the same for the active environment.
In REQUEST VARIABLES, the sync icon next to a local value (Local value actions) offers Update shared value and Reset to shared value.
Secrets
A local value wins over a secret too. For a variable that's secret in the environment, your local value is treated as secret: it shows as dots, it's masked in the execution history, and Copy as cURL keeps it as {{name}}.
FAQ
Do local values follow me to another computer or browser?
No. They're stored on this device and in this browser only. Signing out clears them.
Can teammates see my local values?
No. Only the shared value is visible to others. To share yours, use Use as shared value or Update shared value.
What happened to per-request overrides?
They became local values. An override you had set is moved to the environment that was active when you first opened Collapy after the change, so it now applies to every request that uses the variable, not just one.
